I watched the movie “Nomadland” the other night. Frances McDormand stars as a down-on-her-luck itinerant worker who travels the country, living in her beat-up van and trying to survive. She meets many others in the same situation. (The film features real-life itinerant workers.)
During one scene around a campfire, a woman tells a story about someone she worked with in corporate America for many years. The person got liver disease and died before they could use the sailboat they bought, which was left unused in their driveway. The moral of the story was “Don’t die with your sailboat still in the driveway.”
This scene really impacted me. It reflects much of my own thinking, that we’re here for just a blip of time, and that we need to make the most of it. We can get so busy making a living that we neglect to make a life.
